NASA Mars’ta suyun sıvı halde ve üstelik akar vaziyette bulunduğuna dair kanıtları açıkladı. Suyun açtığı kanallardan 10 yüzme havuzuna yakın su aktığı tahmin ediliyor.

Bazı bilim insanları ise, sıvı halde su yerine sıvı karbondioksidin kanalları açtığını düşünüyor, zira birçok bilgisayar modellemesine göre, sıvı halde su gezegen yüzeyinin ancak birkaç kilometre altında bulunabilir. Sıvı karbondioksit ise yüzeye daha yakın bölgelerde, sıcaklığın -107 santigrat derece olduğu noktalarda dahi bulunabiliyor. Suyun sıvı halde yüzeyin derinliklerinde bulunması dahi, en azından mikrobiyolojik yaşamın varlığına yetiyor.

NASA, şimdiye dek 240.000 fotoğraf çeken Mars Global Surveyor ile iletişimi Kasım ayında kaybetmiş, tüm çabalara karşın iletişim kurulamamıştı. NASA 1996’da gönderilen aracın yörüngede kaybolduğunu düşünüyor.

Scientists believe they found evidence of recent water on Mars

Water may have flowed on Mars within the past decade in short-lived streams that filled gullies now dry, NASA scientists said Wednesday.
The gullies likely carried "five to 10 swimming pools" worth of briny water down the 20- to 30-degree slopes of the craters, Edgett says.
The discovery "truly has changed our thinking about Mars," says planetary geologist Phil Christensen of Arizona State University in Tempe, who spoke at the briefing. "We're talking about liquid water on the surface of Mars today."
Chistensen added that planetary scientists are debating whether water hides in aquifers, frozen ice or snowpacks on Mars.
Edgett suggests that the gullies resulted from groundwater percolating through cracks in the Martian rock around the craters.
But some, such as Stephen Clifford of the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, disagreed with the conclusions tied to the gully observations. The cold, dry terrain of Mars makes it hard to envision how water could possibly exist close to the surface, he says.
