Filipinliler'in başı tayfundan sonra şimdi de çamur selleriyle dertte. Ülkenin doğusunda etkili olan Durian tayfunundan sonra meydana gelen çamur sellerinde ölenlerin sayısının 1000'i aşması bekleniyor. Devlet başkanı Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, 'ulusal afet' ilan ederek, etkilenen bölgelerde arama kurtarma çalışmaları ve rehabilitasyon için 20 milyon dolar ayrılmasını istedi. Kızılhaç'a göre, bölgede 406 ölü bulunuyor ve 389 kişi hâlâ kayıp. Kızılhaç yetkilisi Richard Gordon, "Kayıpların 1000'e ulaşabileceğini, hatta geçebileceğini tahmin ediyoruz" dedi.
Tayfunun sebep olduğu saatte 225 kilometreye kadar çıkan şiddetli rüzgârların volkanik Mayon dağının külleri ve kayalarıyla yarattığı çamur selleri, dağ eteğindeki köyleri yerle bir etti. 500 köyü etkileyen afetten, 800 bin kişi etkilendi, 120 bine yakın ev zarar gördü. Philippines Buries Dead; Typhoon's Toll at 406

Rescue workers began Sunday to bury hundreds of victims of a landslide set off by a typhoon that loosened the slopes of a volcano in Albay Province in the northern Philippines, sending mud and debris down the mountain.
The death toll as recorded by the Red Cross stood at 406 on Sunday, but officials warned that it would certainly climb and that there was little hope of finding more survivors. The Red Cross said that with hundreds of people still missing, and perhaps with entire families buried under the mud, the final death toll could exceed 1,000.
"There are many unidentified bodies, there could be a lot more hidden below," Richard J. Gordon, the chairman of the Philippine National Red Cross, told The Associated Press. "Whole families may have been wiped out."
